001 Menorah | Product Design
The Menorah,
a symbol of light during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, is used over the
course of eight days, and has traditionally taken the shape of an ornate
candelabra with eight branches extending from a center stem. MA-MA saw an opportunity
to introduce an updated, contemporary design for this religious object, by
creating a design object whose function is seemingly ambiguous, but remains
both beautiful and functional.
The
ambiguity of the object is meant to appeal to those who celebrate the holiday,
as well as those who have a general affinity for design. Two nine inch
diameter, one inch thick polished aluminum slabs sit on top of one another, and
are connected by a hidden center rod. The top slab rotates around this
connection, and in doing so, a new hole is revealed signifying each new day of
Hanukkah for which a new candle is to be placed and lit. The highly reflective
metallic exterior of this Menorah aims to amplify the candle light beyond the
object itself, speaking to the symbolism of the holiday it represents.
Menorah by
MA-MA is sold with custom non-drip candles. The product will be
available for purchase soon.
