Proposal | Los Angeles | 2025

Submitted for the Small Lots, Big Impacts competition by cityLab UCLA, this proposal imagines a sustainable, community-focused future for Mid-City Los Angeles through a compact four-unit housing complex on a 7,334-square-foot RD1.5-1XL lot. Designed for first-time homeowners, it embraces infill development, shared amenities, and efficient land use to address the city’s housing shortage and wildfire recovery.

Elevated above a sunken communal garden, the three-story concrete and bronzed-glass structure rests on 14-inch columns in a 15’ x 18’ grid. Drought-tolerant landscaping and exposed aggregate concrete paths define the garden below. Two 19-foot diameter fire-resistant glass block atriums with spiral stairs and central trees bring light and air into the building.

Each 1,690 sq ft mirrored unit includes three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and open living spaces. Floor-to-ceiling Low-E bronze-tinted glass doors open onto 5-foot balconies along the east and west sides.
A patterned 8” x 8” metal screen shades bedroom windows on the north and south, balancing privacy, light, and energy efficiency. This project offers a resilient, modern alternative for urban living in Los Angeles.
